One known as "Walking Library' & another as 'Walking Librarian'

Bad libraries build collections,  Good libraries build services,

Great Libraries build communities.

– R. David Lankes

Radhamani & P Sukumaran both are from kerala and librarians in profession, they carry books to the door step of the readers who are unable to reach the library. Here issome information about these two persons, One known as "Walking Library' & another as 'Walking Librarian'

The Walking Library:

She is Radhamani has travelled kilometres every day to ensure her 'walking library' benefits women, children and the elderly in villages who don't have any access to books. Since 2012, she has started working at Pratibha Public Library in Mothakkara village of Kerala’s Wayanad district. The library was built in 1961. Although the library has been around for almost 60 years, people in the village – women in particular – had no easy access to books until a few years ago. Despite their love for reading, their tight schedules, busy farming lives, and the distance and time to commute to the library made it difficult for them to visit regularly to borrow books. Her efforts for the last 10 years helped Pratibha Public Library's wide collection of books find the readers they deserve. Radhamani carries a heavy bag full of books in hand to these remote locations so everyone can enjoy reading from the comfort of their homes. Radhamani delivers almost 500 books every month. Every time she hands over a book, she marks the entry in her register. Radhamani known as a 'Walking Library'.

The Walking Librarian:

This man named P Sukumaran, every six days a week, fills up two bags with books and walks almost 12 km to deliver them to people in areas of Karuvatta and Kumarapuram grama panchayats in Alappuzha. Over the last 41 years, Sukumaran has been carrying books to readers in their homes. He works at the Kumarapuram Public Library at Karuvatta South, which is under the Kerala State Library Council. He had joined in 1979 and very soon took on the mantle of a ‘walking librarian’ so that he could inspire people to read. Sukumaran’s mission is to inculcate the value of books and the habit of reading among with people. He delivers almost 1,000 books on foot every month.  P Sukumaran is known as a 'Walking Librarian'.
