THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Authorities of Poojappura central jail have completed digitization of the prison library.Inmates can now walk into the library during their daily break, search for their favorite book/author in one of the computer terminals, borrow or reserve it as per availability.

The open stacks lined up on either side of the library have 13,000 books, motivating the inmates to read. But, manual indexing of all the books turned out to be a tedious task.


Also, the manual format prompted a representative from each of 13 blocks to personally collect 50-100 books and distribute them among the inmates of his ward. The books had to be collected back later and re-distributed.

With the details of each book digitized, it has now become easy for both the user and the librarian to track and supply books.

i. A Master’s Degree in Library Science/Information Science/DocumentationScience or an equivalent professional degree with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in point scale wherever grading system is followed) and a consistently good academic record with knowledge of computerization of library.

ii. Qualifying in the National level test conducted for the purpose by the UGC or any other agency approved by the UGC.

iii. However, candidates, who are, or have been awarded a Ph.D. Degree in accordance with the U.G.C. (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree), Regulations, 2009 or the subsequent Regulations if notified by the UGC, shall be exempted from the requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of NET/SLET/SET for recruitment and appointment of University Assistant Librarian/College Librarian.
